ABOUT US

The Southern District Police and Community Relations Council, Inc. is a group of citizens who are dedicated to the improvement of relations between the police and the community. The Council will sponsor and foster a variety of programs and activities designed to maintain public interest in quality police service. Greater awareness of community needs by police officers and increased community participation in police service are the desired goals of this organization.

 

The Council is comprised of volunteer citizens who live or work in the diverse Southern Police District of Baltimore Maryland, who are willing to give of their time, to further the purpose and goals of the Council.

 

The Southern District Police Community Relations Council, Inc. is a Maryland Corporation. Incorporated on April 16, 1993 it is exclusively charitable, educational and nonprofit as defined under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as amended. Our IRS Employer Identification Number is 52-1834141. Our Maryland Sales and Use Tax Exemption Certificate Number is 31140396.

 

THE GOALS OF THE COUNCIL ARE:

  • To create understanding and cooperation between the police and citizens. 
  • To build a positive working relationship between the communities of the Southern  District and its police officers.
  • To serves as a liaison for the community’s residents and businesses with the Southern District police department.
  • To host public monthly meetings “THE THIRD THURSDAY” at the Southern District Police Station which enables individuals and community associations to interface with the police department. The meetings are also a source of information and feed back on the activities of the communities. 
  • To provide opportunities for citizens to suggest improvements in the Southern Districts police service. 
  • To support and encourage neighborhoods to work together to reduce crime since criminals do not recognize neighborhood or district boundaries. 

  • To assist in crime prevention through distributing information on and teaching crime deterrence and how to report crimes in a safe way using Operation Crime Watch numbers.
  • To assist in the prevention of juvenile delinquency by supporting and providing funds for the Southern District Police Explorers program.
  • To promote a drug free environment for our youth by providing anti-drug literature to be handed out at local community festivals and our monthly meetings.
  • To provide an electronic newsletter to members of the community offering crime prevention tips and sharing information from other agencies that will benefit our communities. 

  • To provide a web site for police, community and council information.
  • To serve as a single point of contact for citizens that need help getting answers to specific and sometimes sensitive issues regarding crime related issues. 

  • To acquaint citizens with the professional operation of police activities and acquaint  police officers with the citizens they protect.
  • To help the less fortunate of the Southern District by preparing and distributing Christmas Baskets of Cheer to over 350 families
  • To promote, maintain and teach a walking Citizens on Patrol Program.

 

SOUTHERN DISTRICT FACTS

The Southern District borders three other districts – Central, Western and Southwestern. The district consists of a land area pf approx 12.79 square miles. Much of the district borders on the Inner, Middle and Outer branches of the Patapsco River. The district has a population of about 61,000 people.
